Human is great but Symbolic and Individual thought patterns are the best ones! If you like Leprosy then try Scream Bloody Gore it is much better IMO.

I own "Human" and "Spiritual Healing."

I was so blown away when I first heard "Human," I immediately order "Spiritual Healing" (b/c of this sites review btw) and I feel the same way about that album.

Am I missing something by not owning this one?

Only if you like the sound of Chuck Schuldiner feverishly masturbating while some other guys stand around and kinda watch.

If that's your thing, then by all means, go for it.

lol yeah but you can only play power metal for so long. If his lifespan was longer, i bet he would of dipped back into death at some point.

Is it possible that this album could be better than Symbolic, which was so fucking awesome? Also just heard Scream Bloody Gore which is damn good, especially considering when it came out.

I never cared for this one.
I much prefer Scream Bloody Gore and Leprosy over any of the others.
Symbolic sounds way too polished, though the material is good.

Interesting since they are almost polar opposites in style, at least in regards to Death's musical direction.

My favorites are in chronological order:
SBG
Leprosy
Spiritual Healing
Human
ITP's
and so on.

I remember waiting very patiently for the release of Leprosy.
Killer album, and an all-rime fav.

Yeah, I think it has to do with me hearing Sound of Perseverance first and then waiting a really long time before going any deeper into their discography... their other more artsy albums (ITP, Human and Symbolic) just make me want to listen to SoP, although I still think they're pretty damn good. Leprosy and their other earlier stuff is different enough so that I can just kinda enjoy it on its own or something.

For it's time, Leprosy and SBG were quite brutal... Kreator had the riffs, as did Destruction, but Death (and Possessed) had something a little heavier.
I first heard SBG in 86, alongside Pleasure to Kill, and was blown right the fuck away.

SBG just keeps getting better the more I listen to it. Incredible how the first Death album shows more variety than all the Cannibal Corpse discography.

Though how you couldn't get hooked when you hear the intro riff off Symbolic's title track I'll never know.

Talked about this with a friend who bought it on vinyl recently so I gave it a few plays and I don't really like it that much. Chuck and Christy seem to not be on the same page at all. The flow of the album relies on Christy's drumming so much. I feel like without the drumming it would really just be Chuck wanking on the guitar for an hour. Now, the fact that I felt like this through most of the album made To Forgive is to Suffer so much more awesome because Chuck rips in that track.

Some riffs in Spiritcrusher kinda irritated me because they were pretty close to the Control Denied riffs and I just ended up wanting to hear Expect the Unexpected and not Spiritcrusher.

It's still like a solid 80/100 it just lacks what the other Death albums had and it definitely shows that Chuck was mellowing out.

Couldn't disagree more.. But then again, everyone seems to have different Death favourites. This and Symbolic is definitely mine. Closely followed by Leprosy and Human.
