Not that I like Rammstein anymore, but how is this selling out if they already did this with Engel on Sehnsucht?

*and* with the title track of Mutter, as far as I can remember

When did they ever have a soul? They've always played crappy pop metal, as if appearing in XXX is necro and grim.

Good point. I just wanted to point out that female vocals is nothing new to Rammstein and is not the reason why they are sellouts.

Rammstein are indisputable king of industrial metal. This album is indeed very heavy and melodic, but unfortunately it's out of league of their two previous masterpieces "Reise, Reise" and "Mutter". I thought "Du Hast" was the only decent song they ever made before Mutter album which was filled with killer stuff. I think they 2 first tracks "Benzin" and "Mann gegen man" are very good typical Rammstein songs. The rest of the album are solid tracks, but none really standout. I think Zerstören is the weakest link of this album, which is an extremly boring and predictable song. Feuer und Wasser has a killer chorus, one of the very few melodies that will stay in your mind after you listened to it.

If this wouldn't be Rammstein I would quote it 90/100, but since Rammstein can do so much better I'll give it 80/100.

not until they've heard Godflesh..

Actually I think this score is a little too generous. I know there's this argument about female vocals and all, but the fifth track on here is the first time they've let a female vocalist dominate the verse, and have lyrics in english, so yeah, it's a departure from their style. it didn't work. going to go give it a 49.

Is this a mellower album? Because Ohne Dich and Amour are pretty much my two favorite Rammstein tracks ever. I love it when they go mellow.

Well I'd say some songs from their older albums are still damn catchy. So pop metal maybe but not that crappy. Even if they aren't necro or grim  ...

My point was in regard to the sell-outness. Of course it's catchy; hence the pop-metal. And yes, pretty crappy.

Only if that's the only album you've heard by the band. Mutter and Reise Reise is both heavier and more guitar oriented. Personally I think those are the band's best albums, the first half of Sehnsucht is a classic but the second half is rather forgettable.

And about this album, it really sounds like leftovers. There are a few good songs on here (already mentioned in the review), but the rest is pretty dull. I would personally include Mann Gegen Mann as one of the album's highlights, but compared to their previous offering it wears thin.

I know this review is years old, but my opinion:

I have been defending rammstein for a long time, from people who cry sellout. From people who cry Nazi. From people who see the "Live aus Berlin" DVD and cry gay. Sensucht had a song everyone knew. Mutter was pretty easy to defend. Reise Reise was a little harder.

I can't defend this album. They have lost their touch. Unless they really step up and deliver something amazing, I think I'll just listen to Mutter again...

I agree... I'd give Herzeleid, Sehnsucht and Mutter all a 9/10 score but they started to go downhill with Reise Reise (7/10) and continued to fall with Rosenrot (5/10). Melody has taken a far too important role in Rammstein, they should just stick to the riffs.

I think melody was always an important part of Rammstein's sound, but in a very subtle, pulled back way. Sonne had the chorus, with the snow white vocals in the back and the vocal melody up front. Neither were particularly complex or original melodies, but they worked together perfectly. What they've done with Rosenrot is let the melodies TAKE OVER, at the expense of the crushing industrial groove. SYL balances the two perfectly, Rammstein had the right idea, but the balance has gone all awry.

Alas, Rammstein are rubbish. Listen to KMFDM, Atari Teenage Riot, Einsturzende Neubauten or Faust for some good German Industrial Rock.
