Excellent album, very rewarding review. Well-put, brotha Al, kudos. Mchine Heads finest, and a true epitome of modern 90s metal, something that generally sucks hard donkey balls. Pantera and MH really were in a league of their own. Vulgar Display Of Power and Burn My Eyes are definitely among my top 5 of the 90s. The aggression and unholy riffing of thrash mixed with decapiteting grooves and chuggingly awesome production...got to love it. A definite Classic in my books.

Machine Head to my ears seems to be a mixture of Prong, Slayer and early 90's death metal.. not a bad album, but only groundbreaking in the fact it got the musical mixture 'just right' for mass consumption.

I'll quote myself from the Vulgar Display Of Power thread, I'll just edit it a bit and swap the names around:

Eyesore wrote:
It amazes me when 10 years or so has passed and the musical landscape has changed, so many talk shit about albums that were once hailed as classics! Albums that are classics and were destined to be so from day one. Machine Head's Burn My Eyes, Life Of Agony's River Runs Red, and Pantera's Vulgar Display Of Power, to name a few.

Yes, Burn My Eyes IS a metal album! Always has been, always will be. Anyone disputing that is retarded! Just because this album may or may not have come out during your formative years of musical enlightment doesn't change fact. Take 80's rock for instance, most music fans these days will trash it to death, but the fact remains that music was NEVER more fun or more diverse than when 80's rock was the "it" style. Just go as far as the Hear 'N Aid album and the song "Starz." 40 unique vocalists and musicians on that song, all from the 80's, yet music that comes out today is all the same; a million bands, one singer. But the same people that slam 80's rock or Pantera or Machine Head are the ones that say Avenged Sevenfold's new album is power metal!

Ehhh! WRONG! You can dislike music all you want, that's fine, it doesn't change fact. The bottom line is that you may not like this album, but it is a classic metal album through and through! An album that changed the face of music drastically and still stands tall to this day!

This album kicks ass. Classic all the way!

Understand?

In short: It's a metal classic in terms of influence. The quality is a seperate issue.

Although Eyesore and DM very eloquently put it into to plain view, Ill just add my two cents.

I would say that the reason is a basis of influence. Although both Extreme Aggression and Burn My Eyes are awesome records, Burn My Eyes, as an album, has had a much larger impact and influence on a genre and bands that came after it. Whether that genre or those bands are good or not, thusly making the influences positive/negative in ones mind, is purely a matter of taste and opinion, making the subject completely irrelevant when considering an albums "Classicness" (watch out for the nifty slice of self-contradiction coming ahead).

This is the difference-maker that I myself consider when trying to make the painful and challenging borderline between albums that are "just" fan-fuckinübersupermarvellousawesome-tastic, and albums that are simply one notch above, in other words "Classic". The factor of influence on a scene, on a genre, on an audience. I know I always dont get it right, as Im the first to admit that Iced Earth's Alive In Athens triple-live isnt the most influential record around, but it just is so damn GOOD. Besides, here in Finland we have a saying, "Poikkeus vahvistaa säännön." ("The exception verifies the rule")

Of course, everything said above is my opinion, view and method, and mine alone. Im not speaking for anyone else, or claiming that I could. Feel free to support it or not.

If metal was embraced like some other genres out there, Burn My Eyes would have been the metal equivalent to Nirvana's Nevermind. When Burn My Eyes came out the metal world went fucking nuts! If you were 3 years old then you wouldn't understand, if you weren't in tune with the happenings going on in the metal world, you wouldn't understand. That album simply blew everyone away!

Sure, some people didn't like it, but as a whole that album is definitely a classic.

Davidian kicks ass allright, I can't say the same for the rest of the album.

...This had an impact on metal so it should be a classic. Well Korn's first album (whatever its name is) also had a huge impact on the metal world. So do we consider it a classic ? No fuckin way. If this had a impact really what kind of bands was it followed by? Metalcore bands, right ? Well then I think a close minded metalhead has every right to boo this album. Booo I say, booo.

Thank you and good night.

No. Metalcore did not follow. And yes, Korn's debut is definitely a fucking classic. You may hate it, but it's still a classic.
