Wow, I thought I was the only person alive who has ever even heard of Throcult. I don't care what they say about you metalreviews.com, you're alright with me.

Turns out I met the drummer who did some print work for me at Kinkos. We got to talking about music and he mentioned he used to be in a band called Throcult.

I went home and checked the credits for Soldiers of a Blackened War, but it was some other name. Can someone verify if the demo credits a guy named Dustin on drums?

Anyway as far as this album goes I was very dissapointed that all the old crew were gone. "Soldiers" had so much personality I hate this new stuff. I loved the old singer, the chick bass player, and the keyboards. Now all I have left is some guy named Ivan who won't stop growling all over every song.

*sigh*

Dustin told me they kicked him out of the band because they wanted to do a heavier album which meant he was gonna sit and do grind beats all day and he was againt it. So looks like the two guitarists were the ones wanting to do heavier music. Looks like they got their wish. 50/100

Oh, and that's enough already with the fucking tanks on album covers.

I have reviewed all of their stuff thus far for MR, including demo, the first album (Soldiers), which borrowed a lot from the demo, and this. I agree with you, this effort lost them personality, and is the weakest thus far. I will check the credits for drumming on the demo and the first album, but if I forget, feel free to remind me to get back to you.

You mentioned in the review of the demo that the drummer had been replaced... maybe that was the guy I talked to. He is in a band called Gematria now, playing guitar, so I sent him an E-mail and maybe I'll get the inside story of Throcult.

Thanks for the reply by the way, I was worried this review had been completely forgotten.

Sorry, took me a while to get back to you.
Looks like your friend is not lying. The drum credits on the first demo go to Dustin Parsons, a blonde guy with long hair. On Soldiers the drumming was done by Jeremy Portz (of another CO outfit Cerberus, which is led by Dave Otero, and which I really like), and by Stormbringer they changed the drummer to David Csiscely, who went totally bananas with blasts, of course this is what Ivan Alcala wanted. The other guitarist, the only leftover from the old days, Nick Jackson, is also out, so THrocult right now is pretty much all Alcala by himself.

heh, thanks for getting back to me. It would have been easy to post the review and forget about it, but you guys seem to genuinely care about the music, so again thanks for taking the time to research that. Anyway, like I said, Dustin told me they wanted him to do pure heavy drumming and he said it was too mindless so he got the boot. To this day I can throw in Soldiers of a Blackened War and totally be drawn into the album. If they had stayed together and on that path I could easily see them have success with the blackened death style, especially given the attention that The Black Dahlia Murder has gotten. But this new stuff... sure its heavy as fuck and its technical as hell, but it is no fun to listen to. Way to go Ivan.

I agree. I have soldiers and liked it. Good melodic black metal, but I have not really read much promising stuff on the new albums :(
