Well first off, my facts arent wrong. Helloween has had 6 member shifts since the beginning.

Kai Hansen, Michael Kiske, Uli Kush, Roland Grapow, Ingo Switchenburg, and Mikkey Dee. Now granted Ingo died, but when you look at the current line up of

Andi Deris, Michael Weikath, Sascha Gerstner, Markus Graskopf, and Daniel Lobel....the band is considerably different, especially in the last few years.....and lets face it, there is nothing now that separates Helloween from the hundreds of other bands. Originally they did have a unique sound.

Gamma Ray has had its share of lineup changes, but this was in the formative years of the band when Kai hadnt really decided what he wanted to do....but the line up of Kai Hanse, Henjo Richter, Daniel Zimmerman, and Dirk Schlacter, have been together for almost ten years....and before that Thomas Knack and Jan Rubach were in the band....for a long time. So to say that Gamma Ray has had the same lineup situation as Helloween is innaccurate. Gamma Ray has always had a more stable line up than Helloween.

And Helloween does abuse the generic riffs and copious amounts of double bass, they do, its a fact and its reflected in their music.

Dude, saying it doesn't make it true. Jesus. Helloween have a unique sound, they always have. Gamma Ray does not. Gamma Ray, while a great band, are the ones that sound like "hundreds of other bands." I think you have your bands mixed up, or are you just saying these things to try and convince yourself that you're right? NO BAND sounds like Helloween. Deal with it.

As for the line-up changes, quit being dumb. Gamma Ray has gone through the same amount of line-up changes as Helloween. In 20+ years Helloween has had 11 members. In 15 years Gamma Ray has had 10 members. Now please shut up.

I'm sorry dude, but now you are speaking bull shit. Name one band who sounds like Gamma Ray. Kai Hansen is THE BEST song writer in the genre and shows it one every album he delivers. Helloween does indeed have their own sound, but many bands have been influenced by that sound making them sound like Helloween. Gamma Ray has influenced many bands, but I am yet to see a replica Gamma Ray.

You're out of your mind! There isn't anything that separates Gamma Ray from the flock except maybe better songwriting. Now, don't mistake my words, that is my opinion. It can be argued, but when I listen to Gamma Ray I don't hear anything that makes them stand out from the rest of the bands in that genre, but when I hear Helloween you KNOW it's Helloween. They have a unique, signature sound. I don't think Gamma Ray has a unique sound at all, they're just damn good.

I think you're right but don't forget the paternity of Helloween's unique signature is to be given to Kai Hansen... apart from that, I fully agree...

True, but Helloween from '94 onwards have a quirky sound all their own that Hansen has nothing to do with.

Similarly, Gamma Ray have carried on the classic Helloween sound to what it would have probably progressed to if Kiske and Weikath hadn't suffered bouts of insanity.

agreed.... but take Power Plant, take Hansen's voice off and replace it with Derris or Kiske and you'll get something very close to Helloween

imo, it's Kai's voice that is the trademark of Gamma Ray. otherwise, it's Helloween metal by the book (a little less cheesy though).

Right, but I think Helloween's uniqueness is mainly attributed to Deris's unique vocals and came after Kiske left. Put a typical power metal vocalist in there and I'd probably say the same thing about them. They wouldn't really sound very different from the rest of the power metal bands out there.

Taking a little sidestep here, I'm going to see Helloween next months and I think it'd be cool to hear Deris singing a couple of songs from Walls of Jericho. He has a very unique voice, but with a similar rasp to Kai, so it'd be interesting to hear his take on the old stuff.

I'd love to see them live. I never have. Do they play any old songs?

indeed, he'll fit better than Kiske did on the older Helloween songs... imo Derris is the best singer Helloween has ever had, he just doesn't have the best songs (except on Dark Ride which you must be aware I'm a happy supporter of...) to express it...

Dark Ride is a great album, but ridiculously overrated.

Well I saw them at Sweden Rock a couple of years ago, and they played stuff from nearly every album, incl. the Helloween EP ( I didn't have Walls at that point so I can't remember how well it turned out), but that was a special set, so I don't know what they're like on tour.

I'm pretty sure they'll still play stuff like I Want Out and Keeper of the Seven Keys.

I always thought it would be kind of funny to hear them play "I Want Out," you know?

What, cause its a Kai song? Or because of the reason he wrote it (well, that's what he'll tell you nowadays anyway  )?

Well, yeah...both. I mean, it's cool playing a song he wrote, but I just find it funny that they play a song he wrote about hating being in the band. Hehehe.

You don't think that's what it means?

Hmm I'm unsure. I get the feeling sometimes that after people realised "I Want Out...hey, and then he quit the band!" Kai realised it was cute story to tell.

I mean when you read the lyrics like "In school they teach us what to think, but everyone says different things, and they're all convinced that they're the ones to see," well what does that have to do with leaving Helloween?

True. There's also a band called Guano Apes from Germany, so I don't take German-to-English lyrics seriously! Haha. Kai may have actually found those to be witty and perfect for his feelings of leaving the band. They make no sense, but does Bat Shit Apes make any more sense? :D

This album is soooo insanely good. A true metal masterpiece. Damn, those guys are geniuses when writing songs and performing them. I just thought I'd give it a nudge in your playlists by posting once again about how much it rocks. :dio:
