I bought this album blindly, without hearing one song and reading all the negative comments made here and elsewhere. Do i regret buying it...HELL NO!
As i have only just got it today and havent had much time to listen to it, i'm currently upto Catch Of The Century. But what i've heard so far is great. I love this side of Edguy. To be honest i was getting a tad bored of their "normal" stuff, album after album, and it is refreshing to hear a band play something different, but not fuck it up like St. Anger.
This is Edguy's fun side coming out. We all know that Tobias and co are clowns at heart and we hear their funny side in their songs with almost every album. Lavatory Love Machine is a great example. That song is fuckin' awesome and Rocket Ride is a expansion of that. Fun, laid back rock out.
I think this is what the band needed in their current state, to show something different to the fans and media and then sit back and watch the freak show they have created.
So far, my fav tracks would be Sacrifice all the way. Wasted Time and Matrix are pretty good. The Asylum kicks ass after a ballad-esk start and i am a total sucker for rock ballads, so i love Save Me. As i said, thats where i am up to atm. Cannot wait to hear Trinidad and give my opinion, as it seems 50-50 love it/hate it on here.

Change can be good, people

Ouf !! I took some delay with Edguy !!
Damned ! I really want that CD as soon as possible !! We've been waiting for it for so long !!!
I read lots of bad comments about it, but I don't know...I'm sure it's great anyway.
Well, at least, Edguy never disappointed me till now...
As soon as I have a bit more $, I run for it !!
Thanks for the nice review, Chris !!!!! :)

I can't find the goddamn thing around here. The Superheroes EP is in stores, but not the new album, nor can I find the special edition of Synchestra. Lame.

Anyway, Vikie, the new album is great! There's more melodic rock/metal than power metal, but it's a great album. If you want power metal you may not like it, if you just want a good album then you should dig on it.

fuck it, your message got censored... here's what everybody should have read :

But, actually, i'm glad Edguy finally let go off the power metal influences which sounded rather forced... I'll try this one just in case... :)

Well, I got it today.

Personally, I think it's a good album and sounds fresh. However, I miss the days of Mandrake - as this is no Mandrake.

1) The Asylum - I can see how people say this sounds like The Piper Never Dies. The chorus part, part of it sounds exactly like Piper. A shame.
2) Trinidad - I think this is a good song. It's different, but the chorus is catchy and its just a typical fun Edguy song.
3) Save Me - Could be a Bon Jovi song. Most commerical/mainstream song they've ever done
4) Fucking with Fire - Great song! Love the 80's sound to it

Probably my favorite song from the first day is Wasted Time - love the chorus to it.

I also miss the old Tobias chorus's, where he would layer himself tons of times like in Avantasia and the Mandrake and pre-Mandrake era's. He still had back up singers, but now he relies more on their sound and its changed somewhat.

Still sounds real good, but I always like how he layered himself in choruses, and now its less present.

Well i've just listened to the rest of the album (Catch Of The Century - Fucking With Fire). My last post about this album, i only had time to hear it upto Save Me.

I tell you what, i am even more impressed with the 2nd half than the first half. This album rocks and i cant see why most of you are putting it down.
Just because it isnt a Vain Glory Opera or Theatre Of Salvation. How boring would that be if all they did was do the same fomula like VGO with every album?
Those who wish they kept making Theatre Of Salvation over and over are the ones who are afraid of change....i pity you....

Me personally, i thought Mandrake, The Savage Poetry and Hellfire Club were better overall than Vain Glory Opera and Theatre Of Salvation.

Anyway onto the marvellous Rocket Ride...

Hands down, an awesome Edguy release, exactly what i was hoping for and more. The best tracks for me include Superheroes, Catch Of The Century, Fucking With Fire, Save Me and Sacrifice.
And yes, i think Trinidad is great. Just a fun song along the lines of Lavatory Love Machine, but not as good. The best part is in the chorus when you hear "Marnananana" in the background at the end of each sentence

Fucking With Fire has that great 80's beat and riff that i love, being a big fan of AC/DC, Kiss and then all those 80's hair metal bands that used the same fomula.

Superheroes is your typical rockin' Edguy track, ala King Of Fools. Kickin' beat, with a nice "Peter Gunn Theme" riff at the start. Great track.

Out Of Vogue is pretty good, one of the more speedier tracks that we are used to with Edguy. Still has that fun feel to it.

Catch Of The Century kicks ass! The beat and riffs are just right up my alley. I love this sound. Very catchy chorus. Tobias' voice just makes this song so much better when he's singing in a fun way, not the serious way than in previous albums. Kickin' solo too.

IMO, the 2 poorest songs on the album is the title track and Return To The Tribe. When i say poor, i dont mean bad, just that the other tracks are better.

Overall, i love this album. Sure its not power metal, but who fucking cares. It rocks, it's fun, it's catchy and that's all that matters.

My score: 94/100 and a very strong contender for album of the year, but there's a LONG way to go yet. But it'll definatelly be in my top 5.

Those who embrace change (that works) and love Edguy, go out and buy this album. Those who are stuck wishing Edguy made nothing but VGO and TOS over and over (and thinking they peaked at those albums  ), then you wont like it. Too bad for you cause you dont know what you're missing.

"Return To The Tribe" and "Trinidad" are the worst for me, I'm not big on "Sacrifice" either. The rest kick ass!

Oh, so you think that they should be making albums like Mandrake and Hellfire Club over and over again?
Seriously, just because someone finds an older album by a band better than a new one doesn't mean that person wishes the band to re-record the same album over and over again. And I don't think anyone here has actually said that they wanted Edguy to make Vain Glory Opera and Theater of Salvation over and over again.

Yeah I hate when people use this argument. There's a difference between staying in the same style and repeating yourself.

Never did i say they should make Mandrake and Hellfire Club over and over. Edguy has had a natural progression with every album, a different sound, style, etc. The only 2 that are similar are VGO and TOT.
There has been 6-7 posts on here, referring back to VGO and TOT, saying i hope they dont abandon this sound, or hoping for Edguy to get back to the style and songwriting/lyrics of those two albums. Hoping Rocket Ride's sound is a blast back to the sounds of those two albums.
You know what that says to me: that these people are hoping that Edguy re-create the formulas of VGO and TOT. Which means all they'd like to hear is those albums done the same way every time. Why would they hate that, every album with the same style as VGO...they'd love it.

So they have said it, but not in those exact words

They use the excuse of saying peaked cause they dont like the progression of the band's sound. Oh, i dont like this different sound Edguy are doing now...why cant it be like VGO....hmm i'll just say that they peaked with those albums even though they have released 3 more since then and have gotten bigger with every one....

Natural progression is normal. Edguy has done it since album #1. Mandrake is different from TOT, Savage Poetry is different from VGO, Hellfire Club is different from Mandrake. VGO is different from Kingdom Of Madness. And it continous here again with Rocket Ride.

I would give this post a modest reply, but it seems you have already done all my thinking for me. Saved me some time and energy, so I guess I should thank you.

You should NESS, its an awesome album.

Dont go into it thinking about past Edguy albums, cause you'll never like it, sound is too different. I'm sure it will grow on you.

I'm re-listening to Rocket Ride at the moment and have made it to "Matrix". Wow, this song is horrible, although "Rocket Ride" and "Wasted Time" were decent. "Sacrifice" was boring, but not horrible. Let's see how the rest of the album goes, so far it’s better than my first listen.

I might up my score to a 62/100 simply for my appreciation for the first three songs. They are not good, but they are decent tracks. The only killer songs are “Superheroes” and "Return to the Tribe." The rest is udder shit. Seriously, what a waist. I'm just now waiting for "Fucking with Fire" to get over (I wish it would come sooner) and the album is my disappointment of... well, actually it is in my top ten disappointments of all time sitting behind Stratovarius. Now I need to cleanse my ears.

Why do some of you love "Superheroes" but not many of the other songs? I think "Superheroes" is essentially the style this whole album is in, heavy rock songs with goddamn catchy hooks. You people are weirdos! :D

I don't necessarily love "Superheroes." I actually hated it when I first heard the EP. Then it kind of grew on me. It is one of the stronger tracks on the album following behind "Return to the Tribe" (now there is an awesome song).

Hehe...besides "Trinidad," "Return To The Tribe" is my least favorite. I find it to be terribly weak, just boring.
