Although I initially wasn’t aware that Revenge is a side-project of Angelcorpse’s Pete Helmkamp, you can hear the similarity in the band’s sound. For all that Angelcorpse is a tight, controlled assault on the senses, wave upon wave of riffs coming at you in a Blackened Death Metal storm, Revenge is angrier, more chaotic, the sense of technical control gone as the band concentrate on sheer annihilation. Imagine early Darkthrone as covered by a goregrind band, and you’re halfway there, the rawness in this band’s sound not from especially high-pitched riffing, but a morass of murky noise that only vocals and drums can be heard relatively clearly from.

The music rattles along at quite a pace, frequently switching between slow and fast sections but giving much more time to the latter. There’s little to distinguish individual songs from each other, as they all follow much the same pattern, but the music never gets dull, despite the low-fi execution. The atmosphere evoked is not a pleasant one - as you might have guessed by now - Helmkamp and Read’s vocals being furious vomits of noise, the guitar sound is cavernous, the drums seeming echoing and somehow fluid. Overall, it’s much like a sped-up, angrier version of Mayhem’s Ordo Ad Chao album, the same slightly distant production allowing the odd riff or drum blast to emerge in relative clarity before it’s buried again, yet without the overall sense of flow that Ordo had.

This is very, very much a matter of taste, and it’s definitely something you’ll either love from the outset or simply find completely impenetrable. Infiltration.Downfall.Death won’t draw you in at all; it demands effort and perseverance before it gives up its secrets. Not for the faint-hearted.
