F5 features among its ranks, ex-Megadeth members Dave Ellefson (bass) and Jimmy DeGrasso (drums). Also in the band are vocalist Dave Steele and guitarists Steve Conley and John Davis. The Reckoning is the band's second album and the follow-up to 2005's A Drug For All Seasons. F5 combines classic heavy metal and thrash with modern heavy metal; using a more aggressive yet melodic vocal attack and lots of chunky de-tuned guitar riffs. Much in the same vein as bands like Disturbed, F5's new album sees an even more aggressive and heavier approach than their debut and the evolution of Dale Steele who is well on his way to developing a more original vocal style.

Although laden with drop D tuned guitar riffs, angst ridden vocals and lots of aggression, the big difference between F5 and others in the modern metal genre is the abundance of clever and interesting riffs as well as lots of solid lead guitar work and harmonized lead fills. Some of the thundering heaviness of the early 90's Megadeth sound can be heard throughout this album; propelled by some solid double bass work by Jimmy DeGrasso. All the tracks are strong on this album yet only in a few instances does an exceptional "hook", vocal or chorus really stand out. I Am The Taker is an example where everything comes together very nicely with solid riffing, a slight prog metal feel and a solid, catchy vocal. The title track The Reckoning, borrows a little from 80's metal with its classic sounding opening riff. Lots of attitude and chugging heaviness accompanied by stuttering double bass works very well for this track also. More traditional metal riffs are used for the track Love Is Dead as well with Rank And File using a faster Megadeth like style. Both Through Hell and Control feature very cool and interesting riff patterns with Control using Queensryche style harmonized pull-off lead work. Both of these tracks have a few more "hooks" in them and really stand out above the rest.

F5 has produced a more than worthy follow-up to A Drug For All Seasons with an album that is not only better, but is much heavier and aggressive overall. The guitar work is truly a highlight on The Reckoning with excellent riffs and lead guitar work; something not normally heard with many of today's modern metal bands. The music and vocals are solid yet quite a few of the tracks could use a little "spice" or "hooks" to notch up the overall quality a bit. This is a very good album and one that casual modern metal fans (like myself) or those who want to "test the waters" of that genre should definitely check out. On the other hand, if you're a seasoned veteran and enjoy bands like Disturbed, a real feast awaits you.....
