My first taste of beer was Lowenbrau. They still make that stuff?
Hell yes, they still make Löwenbräu! One of my favourite beers, though not really the Original (you know, light blue can). Löwenbräu dunkles and Triumphator are the best they have to offer, imo.

Really never been a fan of Belgian beers as whole, actually.
Are you serious? Have you ever tried the decent beers and not the so-called 'Belgian' exports? The fantastic variety of abbey breweries we have, that's the real deal.
Since I've never been to Belgium I probably can't say I've had a fair sampling of the beer, but what I've tried I didn't like. From memory I've tried Stella (though I guess we can ignore that), Leffe, Chimay, Duvel, a really shitty cherry-flavoured beer that was horribly disgusting and a few more that I can't recall the names of at the moment. Perhaps part of the problem was that I don't like very many light beers, and nearly every Belgian beer I've tried was a blond beer.
