It's been a while since I've heard it, so I'll have to spin it again before I can give anything more than a vague answer.

I remember Fripp's soundscapes being a highlight, but that's hardly something I can attribute to the talent of Steven Wilson....

I think it's just Wilson's general sound. Not of his voice, but the general sound he is attempting to achieve with this project. It strikes me as meandering, and terribly dull in places. I have no qualms with long compositions, generally speaking, so its not the length of the tracks that bother me.

I don't really remember hating this, anyway. It's just more of a "nothing special" kind of experience. I've read a lot of positive reviews of this, by people who like a lot of the same music as me, and I guess I just don't hear what they hear. I'll put this on at some point and come back to you with more detailed reasoning.

That about sums it up for me. The part where it picks up stand out for me, but PT has always been hit or miss for me. They write really good hard rock tracks, but the ambient moments lose me all too often.

U-hum! Cool. Yeah, Wilson's first few albums were completely Floydish in sound. However, he did eventually find his own sound after the fist few and did a great fuckin' in doing so. I also love his own solo stuff and think it's much better than PT. Have you heard of his solo albums? He currently has two albums out. I highly suggest you check them if not already.

I never bothered, I kind of figured it would be more of the same. If it's different, I definitely would not be opposed to having a listen.

I never bothered, I kind of figured it would be more of the same. If it's different, I definitely would not be opposed to having a listen.

I think it's different in a way that it comes out to be much more "thoughtful" and altogether a more bald statement about his compositional abilities in its totality.

Ah, so it seems we do have similar tastes within Metal!

When DevWal was trying to get me into Death Metal for the first time a few years ago, he told me to buy Altars of Madness, which at the time I thought was ok, but it didn't inspire me to get more DM albums just yet. (although I do quite enjoy that one now)

Later, when I got properly into the genre, I picked this one up and I like it much better. I think it's really the highlight of their career by far.

It took me a while to get into Morbid Angel but once I did they are quite brilliant.
