I just bought this a few minutes ago and am now listening.
I must say, I like this! It is the same style they've been doing since Rebel Extravaganza. Yes it's a bit more stripped down, and yes Frost has been curbed a bit. I really dig the somewhat drony sound. The riffs are quite unique. K.I.N.G. is a pretty lame song, and I can see how that video would turn people away from it. The rest of it doesn't sound like K.I.N.G. though. The rest sounds more, mature. This is Volcano part 2, but with even more toying with the sound. The clean vocal parts are a rather shocking at first, but they do lend a strange atmosphere to the album. Along with the tasteful Keyboard work it adds a whole new dimension to the music.
If you like Volcano, go ahead and get this. If you're still waiting for Dark Medieval Times part 2, well that memo came a few years ago. It's a very well done album, and isn't "commercial" in the least. It's just different, and I for one am glad to see Satyr continually stepping out of the box.
So if they are signed to Roadrunner, how come my copy is from Century Media/Kaleidoscope and features the Vinyl bonus track?
I'd heard very mixed opinions of this album at a more black-metaled forum I frequent and considering you are willing to go on board with this I figure it can't be that bad. I'll probably check it out sometime.
Like I said, I find it to be a pretty kick-ass album. I really dig the new sound they have forged for themselves. Loud, booming guitar riffs, with very abstract strumming. Frost shines here as always, it's not a blast-beat mania, but he is still one of the most creative guys behind the kit out there. If you like what they have been doing recently, I see no reason why you wouldn't like Now, Diabolical. I think if Satyr would have roughed up the production a bit, the album would have been better received. The guitar tone on this album is a little strange sounding.
If you do check it out, make sure to get the Bonus Track Storm(of the Destroyer), it sounds like something from the old days. Snorre from Thorns plays guitar on that song.
