it's a very indian-y dish, we eat that same dhaal (or something very similar) on a regular basis.

Yeah we eat it regularly here as well. It's an Indian dish but it's popular here among all the races. A must have when eating the roti canai.

ha ha, Roti Plata is like in my top 5 foods of all time. Never had canai or Roti John though.

Seremban/MalaccaPetaling Jaya/Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia

I alternate between these towns cos my hometown's in Seremban, college's in Malacca, intership in Petaling Jaya and I bum around in Kuala Lumpur quite often.

Anybody planning a trip to Malaysia soon?

I was in Malaysia last year... I spent a few days in Malacca, and it ended up being one of my favorite cities in SE Asia. The old section of town with the Chinese-style shrines was really pretty (especially when they lit up the lanterns at night), and I liked all the Pirate stuff in the museum. KL I didn't like so much... it was big and bustling, but not too interesting. Have you ever been to Kuching on the Malaysian side of Borneo? That's another place that was really laid-back and just pleasant to be in.

Oh, one thing I have to know... what's up with Chicken and Rice? Maybe I just went to all the wrong restaurants, but all I remember eating in Malaysia was Chicken and Rice... after two weeks I thought I was going to grow fucking wings.

I have been to Kuching several times. I dug it a lot, very laid back and relaxed. I drank till 4 in the morning at the bar in the Holiday in with a band from KL and the He-shes in it were dedicating songs to my co worker, crazy times. Brutal freaking hangover at the Kuching Airport with no Air-Con was brutal.......

I like the Chinese food in Melaka a lot too, better then Singapore but not close to Taiwan or China. If you go to Melaka again, find the City Bay View Hotel, right across the street from that is a Chinese Seafood Rest open air, it is called Lee something (that is all the Chinese I can read), they can speak English, order their Fried Rice, Green Samba style fish and the hot plate deer meat, incrediable. Also keep walking down that main street and their is the Famosa Chickend Rice place which is great and then keep going and you hit the tourist stuff (which seems you already found) lots of cool shit there just always bargain if you buy anything.

Funny thing about Melaka is I work there usually but one time I took an ex GF there for like a vacation and she was from the Phils but looks a little different and everywhere we went dudes kept asking her is she was Malay, I guess inter racial dating stuff isn't allowed or something there (unless you are Chinese Malay or something) it was bizarre, at least 4 times that happenend.

Anyways, cool place, cool country.

I was just in Melaka last month for a day. I work at the National Semi plant when i go there and drive up from Singapore. Prob be back sometime in May or June. Never been to KL and JB is a little rough for me.......ha ha.

Arizona here but I spend about half the year in Asia, last year mostly Korea, but also Taiwan, China, Singapore, Malaysia and Japan.

Melaka is a great place. Where's your office? I live in Ayer Keroh, around the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC).

If I stay the night there I stay at the City Bay View hotel. My office is actually in the US and I usually fly to Singapore and drive to Melaka.

Well interracial marriages are quite common here. Especially among the Chinese and Indians. But yeah, some people are still old fashioned and can be a prick. I'm not sure why, but when an Indian guy dates a Chinese girl, you'll be getting a lot of cock stares from the Chinese. It's like they're not really open to this kind of situation.

It can be a pain in the ass most of the time. There were a few times I took my good friend out for dinner and ice cream in Melaka, and we got a lot of weird stares from many Chinese. Just feel like slapping them.

People are like that every where in the world. The only places I never really noticed it was in Taiwan or China, nobody seems to give a shit who you are with there, especially Taiwan. Japan you get it, big time at certain places. Hell US is bad enough.

I just figured it might be some Muslim law or something.....

Well here in Malaysia, the Muslim laws or rights are pretty strong and strict. If a non Muslim marries a Muslim, he/she HAS to convert into Islam. If not, the marriage would not be legal and the couple could face charges under the Syariah law (Islamic law). And here in Malaysia, although we have the rights to choose our religion, but Muslims aren't given those privileges. Once a Muslim, always a Muslim. You can't denounce the religion or convert to another religion. Pretty strict. And if a non Muslim converts into Islam for the sake of a marriage, he's not allowed to denounce the religion even if he has divorced the spouse.

Sorry man, it's bad news. It's applied by the state government and it even goes up to the High Courts (Syariah). Each state has their own state religious departments and they're the ones who handle everything that falls under the syariah law. They're famous for raiding hotels and houses to catch unwedded Muslim couples in any act of adultery. Take note that premarital sex is banned in Islam. And oh yeah.....these departments are also famous for raiding gigs in hope to nab Muslim black metal bands. This whole metal thing has become a religious issue now that it's on a verge of being banned. The cops are also raiding gigs as well. And sadly, just to smear the name of metal, there's been cases where there were urine tests carried out during the raid, and quite a number of innocent youths were detained for having failed the urine test for drugs. Kinda sad here.

I normally don't bother bout police raids or raids by the religious departments. But if there's rumour that the Narc's Dept is planning a raid, I'd stay away from the gig. Better safe than sorry.

fuck man... when i went to Malaysia i was 14, i had no idea things were like that.

but is the muslim majority in favour of this situation? i mean, Portugal is a mostly Catholic country but almost everyone agrees with the sepparation between church/religion and state.

Well yeah, most of the Muslims here agree to it. But of course, you do have some who rebel against it as well.
