imo DEFINATELY the weakest album they have released. But i was waiting a long time for this one, and i should have learned better than to get my hopes up. Especially amidst the terrible releases that the bands in my "they wont let me down" list have undoubtedly been putting out there... As i have read in previous posts there are some here that agree with mardraum being a favorite (if not their best) album. I cannot concur more:
SO!
If you can agree that there was actual expression in the past albums... Vertibrae seemed to be served on a cold plate of tonal absence, like watching a lynch movie on your &$(@#% i-phone. Production value wise, the sound is clean.. no real warmth or integrity, the guitars seemed very unballanced and the general construct seemed void of anything that made even Isa listenable...
At that same time, if you are a Rupophobic metal head, then this may be the album for you. no grime to dirty the ears with, no earthy sounds clogging the airwaves. And again, if i were to compare it to other albums of more "market friendly" groups (if they have recently jumped into that category) i would give it an a+... but it is a "listen at your own risk".
I disagree on the production values comment. Find me a "market friendly" band that records and mixes to analogue tape. It definately has a nice warmth to my ears, you can hear the saturation and compression from how they recorded it! Each to their own and stuff.
