so besides turn-over machine Hossa, Staal has a better +\- then everybody else you mentioned. But wait plus/minus is not everything, what about Staals 50+ points getting 3rd line minutes. Or maybe that cup ring he's got over Bergeron, Richards, and Hossa. Or maybe it's his 358 consecutive games he's played. No you're right he is overrated and doesn't deserve the nomination.

Find me a player with better plus/minus, more points, in the same amount of average ice-time. Oh wait, I bet you can't becuase there isn't any.

Finding someone with a better plus/minus, more points and a similar ice time (within one minute) was quite easy.

Staal--21 G 28 A 49 P, +19 and 19:23 TOI a game this year:

Semin--40 G 44 A 84 P, +36 and 19:07 TOI
Hossa--24 G 27 A 51 P, +24 and 18:42 TOI
Parise--38 G 44 A 82 P, +24 and 19:45 TOI
D. Sedin--29 G 56 A 85 P, +36 and 19:07 TOI
H. Sedin--29 G 83 A 112 P, +35 and 19:40 TOI
Toews--25 G 43 A 68 P, +22 and 20:00 TOI
Zajac--25 G 42 A 67 P, +22 and 20:12 TOI
Wolski--23 G 42 A, +21 and 18:43 TOI

(Plus guys like Sharp, Knuble, and Burrows who played much less than Staal)

Obviously, stats don't give the whole picture, so that is why I posted the discussion on the Selke nominees.

According to the consensus of hockey fans at the most popular hockey forum in the world, my opinion made sense (of course yours had advocates too). I doubt you will budge at all in this debate, but I will anyway: Staal, despite being offensively overrated, is a fine pick for the Selke. I just thought the guys I listed were better selections.

Have you even watched the Penguins this year?

No, of course not! Why would I ever watch the Penguins? It is not like they are on every other national game. Staal is an exciting/dangerous PK and generates breakaways but I don't notice him much ES.
Funny how the only people who agreed with the Staal nomination over on the HockeysFuture boards were Penguin fans http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=766473.

The original point is that Staal was equated to Markov, which I think think is wrong. Did the two of you really need to make ad-hominem arguments here?

You're wrong.. I won't even bother.

And yeah, what DW said.

FYI, I'm not a Penguins fan. In fact, I really dislike that team.

Did you read the thread I posted? It reveals that the Staal selection, among unbiased fans (fans that watch a lot of hockey), was not a popular pick. And yet you made this personal, so you did 'bother'.

Not sure I understand what you mean, the only thing I'm stressing here is that J Staal is more than worthy of that nomination, and I for one, will not complain if he wins it. He's a great player, and has been better than the other ones you listed this year. I am unbiased, I watch a lot of hockey, so I'm entitled to state my opinion, regardless of what others might think.

I can't see a third line dude being as important as a team's best defenseman.

well I don't know about you, but I'd take J.Staal over Semin, Hossa, Burrows, and most of the other guys you posted. Staal has a cup ring, is what 22? And is already being nominated for selke trophies. I'm alps not bias towards Pittsburgh, I fuckin hate the Penguins. But I feel that J.Staal deserves his nominee. Will he win? I doubt it. But he is deserving nonetheless. And his loss will hurt the Penguins.

@noodles

imagine if the Canucks lost Kesler for the remainder of the playoffs, that's what losing Staal is like.

Whenever I actually find the time to sit down to watch a Canucks/Blackhawks series, the Canucks manage to blow leads and forget how to play hockey.

Screw it. I'm watching Lost or South Park instead the rest of the series...

I called it, too bad I didn't post it.

Bertuzzi also had 4 points. He was another guy I said needed to get going.

I'm good like that.

And my prediction is the only team worth a damn in the East is the Penguins.. Halak certainly has earned Montreal some credibility though.

A Montreal-Boston conference final would be epic as hell. Both goalies are playing huge, and the fact that they hate each other. But whoever advances in the west is gonna take it all. Detroit with the experience, San Jose/Chicago has the skill, and then there is Vancouver. Yep, the Canucks. Hmm.

I'd say Pittsburgh's problem continues to be Fleury.

Since I don't think Boston has enough offense to win it all, at this point I hope Detriot just goes nuts and puts 7 goals up every game until winning the cup.

Because I can: Jordan Staal is -4 in the playoffs, tied with Tyler Kennedy for worst on the Penguins.

So the Penguins make it 3-2.. There's an article on NHL.com on how Crosby has not scored in six games. He's gonna get the MVP anyway.
Pretty weird to see the Wings out and the Sharks proceed.

And Joe Thornton, of all people, performing in the playoffs. That is truly shocking.

The Sharks performing at all in the playoffs is a surprise really.. I didn't expect the Red Wings to go all the way this year. They've been really rusty. Is age catching up with them?

MVP is based on the regular season, though.

if the Pens eliminate the Habs, then Halak can't even sniff the Conn Smythe.

And if the Pens don't make it the finals, no Conn Smythe for Crosby.

San Jose-Boston final?

I think the Bruins can make it this year. Rask has been awesome and the style of game the B's play just sucks the life out of most teams. If they get Montreal, they win it for sure. If they get Pitts, it'll be a great series. The entire Boston line-up will be out for Matt Cookes blood.

I kinda hope Montreal loses because I keep watching their games because they're a Canadian team and GO CANADA but it's so boring.
