I can see its usefulness in that respect. In my case it's probably a personal preference. I largely get my new from news sites or Metro and don't really feel the need to change that. But you have brought up a good point and I can see its use in instances like the Middle Eastern uprisings as far as speed of transmission and getting information directly from the source.
In retrospect my previous post was probably just backlash/annoyance at the average person who uses it to advertise every moment of their existence. Its the attention whorism of the average person a la facebook status and so on that I don't like. As though I care if someone just dropped a cornflake on their toe.
