The reviewer spent most of his time on the band's concept. Which is to create music that "add" and all over the place. It's enough to drive a sane person insane. But that's the point. That is what they aim to do with their music. Did they not acheive the concept? Or were you judging the concept and not the band?
the concept is interesting, but they pull it off mediocre at best and have way too much boring metalcore in their sound

We have a lot of bands that follow the same old form of slowly building up a tune with seamless transitions, etc. Isn't it refreshing to have something different for once.
So you're saying you don't like transitions? Why not queue up a playlist of all different types of metal and hit next track ad nauseum then...
There is a lot of bands doing new things that are actually doing them well. take Maudlin of the Well's Bath or Ephel Duath's A Painter's Palette. Those two bands blend many different styles, transition them so perfectly it sounds like they've been doing it for years and in the end are actually rewarding to listen to. Between the Buried and Me just sound like a bunch of different styles glued together randomly (not that even this is a bad thing if done right, since I'm a big fan of Dillinger Escape Plan's Calculating Infinity).

Would they get a higher score if they followed the rules and copied a black metal band or thrash band?
Probably from me at least. They're pretty talented but their style switches are poorly done and the metalcore parts are boring.
