Normally I take pride in being completely anti-melodeth (with very few exceptions), but I just heard a song called 'ThereIn', and it was awesome. A bit of digging with archives revealed it to be from an album called 'Projector', apparently quite experimental. Is the rest of the album this good, or is it like normal melodeth, ie painfully average?

There in is an amazing track indeed but Projector doesn't have another song that comes close to it. If you liked it that much I suggest you try Damage Done , my favourite album by DT. It's no average melodeath album, none of the DT albums are average, all are experimental and very good. Character also slays.

I can't believe you've never heard Dark Tranquillity before.

I have, but it all seemed to At The Gatesy, esp. the new album. Nothing as good on Projector? Shit.

I'll check out Damage Done, any links to MP3s would be appreciated, thanks for recc.

Damage Done I would not reccomend. Its good, but a basically an album that would only appeal to melodeth fans. If you want more original, better Dark Tranquillity, Skydancer and The Gallery are the ways to go.

The Gallery is my favorite by far. Especially the opening track.

Don't listen to them! Projector is an awesome album through and through. It's very different, lots of clean vocals and even female vocals, too. It's a great, great album! Something I wish Dark Tranquillity would incorporate more into their music. I give them credit for going heavy again on the three following albums, but at this point they're starting to tread familiar water. They need to change it up again on the next one.

Honestly, I don't think Dark Tranquillity has a bad album in their catalog! The earlier stuff is more death metal, then they got more thrashy, then experimental with Projector, then they went heavier, but groovier, less thrashy. A great band in my books, easily my favorite melodic death metal band by a mile.

Definitely check out Projector, though. It's a tough album to swallow for DT fans, so asking for an accurate opinion is going to get varying responses. The best thing to do is buy it or download it. I highly recommend it!

Damage Done is the terribly medicore melodeath album you fear Zadster. Damage Done is DT's worst album, without question It doesn't compare to the Gallery. Projector has some other very good, slightly different from the norm tracks, but it's not that way for the whole album. So I suggest the Gallery because it's the best thing they ever did, or pick and choose the other clean vocal tracks from Projector.

Where are the solos on that album? It's just simple songs with simple structures. I'll give you that a couple of the tracks are good, but overall how can it compare to the Gallery or even Projector?

Since when did a solo define an album? And who's comparing? Dark Tranquillity have released similar albums in groups. This is how I see them through the years:

The Death Metal Era:

1. The Demos
2. Skydancer
3. Of Chaos And Eternal Light

The Thrash Melodeath Era:

4. The Gallery
5. Mind's I

The Experimental Era:

6. Projector

The Brutal Melodeath Era:

7. Haven
8. Damage Done
9. Character

I think every album is a great album, so to me, if you dislike Damage Done, you must dislike Haven and Character. Does that make sense?

It's stupid to compare their albums, all of them are great. I don't know if I started this comparing thing, I definitely didn't intend to.
I recommended Damage Done to zadster because it's the easiest album to get into and it's my favourite.

Haven is more like the cheesy keyboards melodic death era. Nonetheless one of my favorite album by DT, maybe the best one.

brutal melodeath?

anyways Zads i think DT are a cut above most melodic death bands.

my favourite song is "punish my heaven" off "the gallery". the rest of the album is not as fast or aggressive but all-round it's pretty good. "silence and..." off that same album is pretty good, though in a different way.

For lack of a better term. Hahaha. The sound on those albums is heavier, I don't know what else to call it. How about Brutal-lite?

Let's just agree to disagree. I liked Haven even if it was cheesy, and Character was ok.

I'll still recommend the Gallery first though.

Yeah, like I said, they're beginning to tread familiar water. They need to change it up again. Of course, any change now is going to be labelled a sellout move. Imagine if Projector came out now, after Character? People would flip.
